Analog Snap by Medway Studios
Analog Snap is one of the latest high quality releases from sample provider ModeAudio. Focusing on analogue percussion, it includes a number of original kicks, snares, and assorted percussion sounds to include in your latest production.
Spanning 251 samples in all, the pack has enough breadth to allow the user to either construct full kits (or use the 12 includes ones), or simply add a little spice to their existing drum rack.
The source for these samples is the same EMS Synthi A I reviewed here. That pack was one of my favourites so far so I was intrigued to see what Modeaudio had come up this time.
The Sounds
The sample pack comes in six folders covering: kicks, snares, claps, hi hats, crashes, and percussion. The kick section is the most comprehensive of the library, with a total of 82 samples in all. Everything from grainy almost 8-bit sounding kicks to mellow bass drops are included here.
Snares and claps cover crisp snappy types to crushing fat layered sounds that could be used to layer with other snare samples in your library or take the center stage of a drum loop.
The hihats and crashes are also full of personality, some nice hits reminiscent of classic electro records would go down well for those after old school styles.
Finally, the percussion samples round out the package with everything from subtle soft hits to almost scary sounding squeals. I would have loved to see a little more selection here on par with the number of kicks included but there's still plenty to keep you busy.
Conclusion
All in all the flexibility and warm tone of the Synthi A is put to great use and this is a pack many will be reaching to for years to come. Apart from the 251 samples there are also 12 kits for Ableton's Drum rack and 5 presets for processing further using Live's built in plugins. Other formats include kits and channel strip settings in their own format.
